Hansen's Disease (Leprosy) — Diagnosis & Treatment in Bengaluru

What most people have been told is wrong

Hansen’s disease is curable. Treatment is free. And within days of starting it, a person is no longer infectious.

It is not highly contagious. It does not spread through touch. It is not hereditary, and it has nothing to do with cleanliness or anything anyone did wrong.

Almost everything difficult about this condition today comes from what people believe about it rather than from the disease itself.

The signs that get missed

It usually begins quietly — a pale or slightly discoloured patch of skin that does not itch, and, crucially, that has lost sensation.

That last part is the clue. A patch you cannot feel properly, or an area of skin that has become numb, is worth having examined. So is unexplained tingling or weakness in the hands or feet, a nerve that feels thickened, painless burns or injuries you did not notice happening, or nodules and thickening of the skin.

These are frequently treated for months as fungal infection, vitiligo or eczema before anyone tests sensation. A dermatologist who is trained in this — as every Indian dermatologist is — will check for it in a few minutes.

Why coming early matters more here than almost anywhere

The bacteria affect nerves. The skin changes are what people notice, but nerve damage is what causes lasting harm — weakness in the hands, difficulty lifting the foot, loss of protective sensation, and the injuries that follow from not being able to feel them.

Treated early, that damage is prevented entirely. Treated late, much of it does not reverse.

Nothing on this page matters more than that sentence.

Care for the whole household

Because Hansen’s disease has a long incubation period, people who live with a patient are assessed as well. Single-dose preventive treatment for close contacts is straightforward, safe and effective, and it protects the family without anyone needing to explain themselves to anybody.

What treatment involves

Multidrug therapy, taken for a defined period, supplied free of charge under the national programme. It works.

What needs careful medical attention is everything around it — the reactions that can occur during and after treatment, ongoing assessment of nerve function, care of the skin and the eyes, and management of any weakness or numbness already present. This is the part that benefits most from continuity with one doctor who knows your case.
